The heated protests went on as a CUPE committee debated president Sid Ryan's proposed ban on Israeli academics from university campuses unless they condemn Israel's attacks on Gaza. They voted in favour of a reworked version, which would see CUPE members at Ontario universities boycott working with Israeli universities engaged in weapons research.

There were about 120 Jewish protesters, many from Toronto. They attracted about 60 Palestinian supporters.

At one point, a flag from the Palestinian side blew across the street to the Jewish side. Some Palestinian supporters crossed to get it and fighting broke out.

The Jewish Defence League waved signs likening Ryan to a Nazi. On one poster, someone pasted a picture of Ryan's head onto a Nazi uniform with a swastika in the background. The slogan read "Terminate Sid Ryan and his brown shirt buddies."

Ryan called the JDL a "fringe group" and said their behaviour was a "disgrace" to the Jewish community.

"The one thing I just cannot condone is the signage they were using where they try to depict myself as a Nazi and using Nazi signage," said Ryan.

"I think that's just completely and totally disrespectful and shameful to the memory of the Holocaust."

CBS 60 Minutes Smears Israel: Bob Simon Refers To Apartheid: Biased Reporting Disguised As Objective Journalism Vilifies Jewish State

I watched this report from 60 Minutes on CBS, and I expected a fair and well-rounded news story, but to my surprise I found an anti-Israel smear piece instead. For example, the reporter Bob Simon asserts that Israel has a few options to choose from including ethnic cleansing and "apartheid." He describes Israel as dominating the lowlands like "Crusaders," (sounding like an al Qaeda spokesman, and didn't the Crusaders slaughter the Jews as well as Muslims?), and he claims Jews get more water than Palestinians — all of these statements are outrageous and refutable. The language and terms used are not objective at all; in fact, they are merely the tendentious talking points of extremists and anti-Zionists. They are composed of negative propaganda including anti-Israel slogans and libelous myths that vilify the Jewish state.

First of all, a little background: Recently, CBS has been reporting that Israel may have been using a "banned weapon" — white phosphorous — despite the Israeli government's insistence that its use was “legal according to international law..." More on this HERE. In the mean time, they've been largely ignoring well-documented Hamas crimes like its use of civilians as human shields. See HERE.

In 2003, The Jerusalem Post referred to a Bob Simon CBS piece on the security fence as “manipulative and shaky on key factual assertions.” See HERE. Apparently, Simon only commiserates with Palestinians and not with Jews. Jewish victims are curiously absent, for the only Jews featured are treated like villains. Palestinian victims are extolled and terrorists and their supporters are exonerated.

In his most recent piece, Simon doesn’t question Dr. Mustafa Barghouti when he refers to the Israeli security fence as a “wall” (it's mostly a fence) or when he claims they are already living under “apartheid." Simon concludes the following about Israel:

... They could try ethnic cleansing, drive the Palestinians out of the West Bank, or they could give the Palestinians the vote. That would be the democratic option but it would mean the end of the Jewish state. Or they could try apartheid — have the minority Israelis rule the majority Palestinians, but apartheid regimes don't have a very long life.

He appropriates the language Barghouti uses without questioning it, without exploring the true sense of the word apartheid, although it isn't anything like the original meaning of apartheid in South Africa. There's no clarification about the term. Apparently, Simon is not aware that calling Israel an "apartheid state" is a slogan used by pro-Palestinian propagandists to deligitimize Israel. More HERE. They similarly use terms like “Nazi State” and make inappropriate Holocaust comparisons.

Irwin Cotler remarked:

[...] if everything is another Holocaust, then nothing is — and the Holocaust itself becomes nothing as well.

No recent event makes this more clear than the inflammatory misuse of Holocaust comparisons to describe the conflict in Gaza, in a dual demonizing indictment.

George Orwell wrote that the English language "becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts." Bob Simon and his cohorts who describe Israel as an "apartheid" state have lost all sense of the meaning of this word. Such a comparison like comparing Gaza to a Nazi concentration camp is ignorant at best. At worst, it's deceitful. And it totally obfuscates the truth and reality.

Bob Simon makes these mistakes with terms and language because he's got a one-sided view of things. Is his mind is tinged with anti-Semitism? Are his sympathies entrenched with the Palestinian cause or does he stand with those who bash Israel? One can only speculate. Why else would Simon fail to mention anything about the effectiveness of the barrier against Palestinian attacks, and why no explanation of the need for checkpoints and the security in order to protect Israeli citizens? These integral points are ignored!

The point is there is no balanced reporting in Simon's piece. No objective analysis. Just Simon's view of things. He's narrowed Israel's predicament down to a few nefarious options. Israeli security operations are portrayed as wanton bullying because there is no terror threat in Simon's eyes. The IDF is shown indiscriminately and arbitrarily taking over a Palestinian home. Context is thrown out the window. We are told this is routine. No Israeli official is sought for comment on it.

Honest Reporting points out that Simon claims that "'Moderate Israelis who deplore the occupation used to believe passionately in a two-state solution.' Yet, to illustrate this point, he interviews Meron Benvenisti, an Israeli who has long advocated a one-state solution and considers Israel to be worse than 'apartheid' South Africa. Is this representative of the Israeli mainstream?” Lost too is the fact that most Israelis are so-called "moderates" and the majority favour a two state solution as long as the Palestinians don't threaten Israel's security as they have from Gaza.

Simon's 60 Minutes report also focuses on Daniella Weiss, introduced as a representative of the settler side, but as Ynet News reported over a month ago (HERE) she has been castigated by the mainstream settler movement. Here again, Simon has selected another character from the fringe of Israeli society to highlight. Essentially, they found a fringe figure of the minority of Israeli citizens. This is a gross misrepresentation.

The truth is Simon’s piece tries to make Israel look bad. That's the pretense. It's not just about the settlements being an obstacle to peace. It's really a setup to vilify Israel.

Incidentally, about Simon's claim that Israel is denying Palestinians fair share of the water: Israel is at the forefront of irrigation and agriculture and allows water to all. The Palestinian side of the fence lacking vegetation and/or the Palestinians being denied water is a canard. More HERE. Sparse vegetation and/or lack of irrigation on the Palestinian side may be a result of their own societal norms or lifestyles or the misplaced priorities of their own government; there is no Israeli policy preventing Palestinians from planting trees and shrubs and no system devised to stop the flow of water to Palestinian homes, as suggested.

You may ask how a mainstream media conglomerate like CBS could get it so wrong. In 2001, Journalist Bernard Goldberg exposed the bias at CBS in his book "Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News."

"Look, Bernie," CBS News President Andrew Heyward told him, "of course there's a liberal bias in the news. All the networks tilt left." More about this HERE.

It so happens that today most people on the left are Israel bashers, many are opposed to Israel's existence and most of the derogatory propaganda comes from the left.

The same pervasive bias in the 60 Minutes Bob Simon piece is what motivated them to use a fake document to try to influence the outcome of the 2004 American election against George Bush, and as a result of the manipulation, Dan Rather and company had to apologize and were forced to resign in ignominy. CBS has proven itself to be biased against Israel and seems incapable of applying standard journalistic principles of accuracy and fairness when it comes to reporting on Israeli-Palestinian issues.

It is even less likely that whoever wins the election will be able to do any better since any result will be either more of the same or the resurrection of a failed former PM.

With Iran's recent acquisition of the S-300 anti-aircraft system, the last grains of sand seem to be slipping through the military option's hour glass.

Oddly enough, Israel's only hope may lie in Obama's naively conceived unconditional direct negotiations with Iran. The main reason Tehran was able to maintain the charade of talks with Europe for so long was the lack of American involvement. Only after Obama invites the Iranian leader to Washington and the President's proposals are rebuffed will things get interesting. Should Iran prove to be intransigent following the unprecedented courting process about to be initiated by the new President things may change dramatically. If negotiations fail the Europeans will no longer be able to hide behind American arrogance as an excuse for inaction. Our friends in Berlin and Zurich will have to decide whether to expose themselves as greedy cowards or rally around the new American president.

Perhaps the Iranians will be able to stall once again, perhaps not. While Iran has been skillfully employing delay tactics to further its dreams of regional dominance, Israel has perfected national procrastination to the point of self-destruction. One cannot help but feel that the nation has been in a coma ever since its Prime Minister fell into one.

For the first time in its history, Israel has forfeited its ability to control its own destiny. The lives of seven million people will depend on America's ability to rein in a fanatical regime during an unprecedented time of economic and military weakness.

This predicament did not come about because of the Jewish state's lack of resources but rather due to mismanagement of virtually every resource at its disposal.

At this stage one can hope for the falling price of oil to slow the centrifuges in Natanz or for the new American President to overcompensate for his perceived inexperience and naiveté. As in the US election, people cling to hope when no tangible solutions are on the horizon. The prospect of any real leadership in Jerusalem is all but gone. Israelis may still have hope but real change is an ocean away.

For another thing, how can Israel be democratic unless it stays Jewish? There are no Arab/Muslim democracies in the region or, indeed, in history.

Back in 2002 I was living on Kibbutz Mishmar HaSharon near Netanya. It was Passover and the bunch of us from the Ulpan were imbibing and eating in the dining hall with everybody else from the Kibbutz. The mood was joyous even though the Palestinians had been steadily increasing their homicidal attacks (it was already 2 years into the Second Intifada), but in the Spring of 2002 things were reaching a crescendo. The Palestinians had stepped up their operations to murder Jews. They were increasingly managing to slip jihadists across the then-porous West Bank border into Israel's heartland. This rarely occurs any more because the Israeli government put up fences and walls along the border.

By Passover 2002, security across Israel was tight. I was hoping there would be no attack/bombing during Passover. I feared the worst.

So the night of March 27, 2002 Hamas brought horrible death to a Passover seder. A suicide bomber entered the banquet hall of the Park Hotel in Netanya, overlooking the Mediterranean, and murdered 30 Jews, more than 100 injured. Many were elderly, had escaped the wrath of the Holocaust in Europe! See HERE.

It was the end of our seder at Mishmar HaSharon and everyone across Israel went to sleep that night with similar bleak thoughts. Everyone went home realizing what it meant. The skies were stormy and electric. Some soldiers, Russian Jews visiting friends got the call that night to prepare to mobilize the next morning. We all got drunk quickly and to bed early.

Just hours before the Nobel announcement, Gore was busy spinning his way out of a devastating United Kingdom court case that found nine substantial science errors in the film version of An Inconvenient Truth.[...]

The first theme of An Inconvenient Truth is that climate change is already devastating and that "very dramatic changes are taking place." On that page in the book, and the next three, are pictures purporting to show that the snows of Mount Kilimanjaro are disappearing. Not true, said the court.

Twenty pages later, a foldout graphic claimed to show 650,000 years of proof that carbon levels in the atmosphere cause temperatures to rise. Not true, said the court. The chart actually shows temperatures increased first, then carbon levels rose. In the film, this sequence alone consumes maybe five minutes, a clever turning point in which Gore mounts a ladder to demonstrate soaring carbon levels and make other false claims.

Pages of photos are built around Katrina and other hurricanes, which the court said cannot scientifically be pinned on global warming.

And so it goes through the book, each of the nine errors a pillar supporting hundreds of subsidiary claims that are now suspect, if not downright wrong. The untrue claim that Chad Lake, in Africa, had disappeared is used to mount an argument that global warming is leading to civil war and genocide in Africa.

The wildly exaggerated sea-level rise in the film and the book is not a small error of fact. It's the basis for a 10-page spread on how "THE MAPS OF THE WORLD WILL HAVE TO BE REDRAWN," showing Florida, Manhattan and San Francisco under water. Pages are devoted to species losses that are not happening.

The question on everybody's mind yesterday was whether the Nobel will spring Gore into the U.S. presidential race. Not a chance, I'd say. The young Al Gore pictured on draftgore.com in reality looks more like the John Travolta character from Hairspray. He is no JFK, as the Gore backers like to think. On the surface of things it would seem that there couldn't be a worse time for serious negotiations: The Hamas takeover of Gaza has effectively split the Palestinians into two separate entities, the American administration is bogged down in Iraq, and Israel's government is paralyzed.

While Olmert needs a peace process for political survival, this is not the main driving force for an accord. What has truly changed is the perceived value of peace with Israel in the minds of Arab dictators.

The Mubaraks and Assads of the region are increasingly concerned with the rise of the Shiites lead by Iran. They're already displeased with Tehran meddling in Lebanon and Iraq, as well as their assistance to Hamas in Gaza. Hezbollah leader Nasrallah and his ilk have become extremely popular on the Arab street for confronting the "Zionist enemy." This is in stark contrast to the Arab dictators who are regarded as puppets of the US and Israel. Furthermore, the Iranian support for the insurgency in Iraq and its eventual political takeover of whatever is left of that country once American forces leave is another major achievement for Tehran.

Due to Europeans' arrogant rejection of the only secular Muslim democracy, the Mullahs are also making quiet but impressive gains in courting Turkey.

In response to the emerging Persian, ideological empire, the so-called moderate Arab states have reasoned that they must make a deal with the Zionist devil. By reaching an accord with Israel the Arab league hopes to strengthen the position of their despotic regimes and stop the advance of domestic Islamic groups that threaten their rule.

It is no secret that the Arab world is just as alarmed at the prospect of a nuclear armed Iran as Israel. Such an eventuality would be a threat to Sunni dominance of the region. It would put the Saudi regime in danger and would undoubtedly fuel an arms race. Peace with Israel would allow the Arabs to turn a blind eye to an American or Israeli pre-emptive strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

The problem from the Israeli perspective lies in the fact that the Arab world is not interested in peace but rather in the byproducts of such an accord. This is significant because the Arab world still refuses to recognize Israel's legitimacy, and the attitude in Arab societies toward Israel would remain unchanged. If an accord only exists on paper than Israel would be giving up territory for a promise that would go out the window if one of the Arab dictators is overthrown. It is also clear from the peace agreement with Egypt and Jordan that Israel would still be portrayed as an eternal enemy that must eventually be annihilated. Peace would be seen as a temporary solution while the Arabs regroup and prepare for a final confrontation.

Ironically, Israel finally has a leader who our neighbours can totally relate to. A man who refuses to take responsibility for his mistakes, sees no reason to step down and is willing to do anything to remain in power. Under these circumstances we should have a "historic accord" signed in no time.

From more than 5,500 miles away, he's one of the few people getting much needed information out to the world.

He runs the blog out of his London apartment, waking up at 3 a.m. every day to review the latest digitally smuggled photos, video and information that's sent in to him.

With few Western journalists allowed in Myanmar, Htike's blog is one of the main information outlets. He said he has as many as 40 people in Myanmar sending him photos or calling him with information. They often take the photos from windows from their homes, he said.

The type that green-lighted a troika of Matthew Shepherd movies after he was senselessly killed because it affirmed their gut feeling that a gay young man living in backward America is destined for death at the hands of hateful ultraconservatives. A street in West Hollywood still stands in his name despite ABC News reporting the story false: He was killed by crazed meth addicts for drugs and money — not because he was gay. Isn't that tragic enough?

Yet Shepherd is still the icon of gay victims' rights, and the mistaken story of his "fate" soon thereafter befell Jake Gyllenhaal's character in "Brokeback Mountain." The Oscar statuette stands as the exclamation point. Victimhood wears like a cashmere sweater in Hollywood, and the mistaken story line of red-state Americans as murderous homophobes is now a timeless artistic truth.

Yet no L.A.-based gay rights group or concerned gay actor readies a film illustrating exactly how Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made his 70-million strong country "gay free." In the studio system these days, only white, conservative Christian Americans get that treatment. Maybe Tony Kushner doesn't want the headache of a fatwa.

Yet despite all of this, you really got me thinking. About race, sexual identity, victim politics, Hollywood values — and even time travel. If I could go back in time, I would go back to your childhood to beat up the boys who beat you up as you started grappling with your homosexuality. I'd go into your past to erase the "hate crimes" that now cause you to blame political conservatism for your deepest wounds. I want to breach the time/space continuum to find out what those young hoodlums were thinking when they went after you. My suspicion is none of them had ever read F.A. Hayek's "The Road to Serfdom," (no, that's not Salma's father) or Russell Kirk's "The Conservative Mind."

Let's get Hollywood to option the rights to the story: It's got it all — race, violence, sexual identity, science-fiction and a character Ang Lee could really sink his teeth into. Think "Boys Don't Cry" meets "Back to the Future." And at the end of the film, it's 2014 and I see that you and your partner have been nabbed by Chomsky-quoting al Qaeda fanatics who are getting ready to behead you in an abandoned auto factory in Michigan for the sin of brunching in Dearborn.

But the moment before they chop your heads off — in the nick of time (just like in the Republicans' favorite show, "24," which we are grateful you guys allowed us to have) — the good guys, in this case the U.S. Marines, bust through the doors to save you both. At this point, I will have drafted a powerful soliloquy for your character. It'll be a cinematic epiphany in which you show remorse for tilting at white, straight and conservative windmills — to which you and Hollywood almost exclusively blame for all that is wrong in the world.

Ahmadinejad, in New York this week for the opening of the United Nations General Assembly, has accepted an invitation to speak on Monday from the Columbia School of International and Public Affairs. On Sunday, the dean of the law school, David Schizer, joined Jewish groups and others in criticizing the invitation.

"Although we believe in free and open debate at Columbia and should never suppress points of view, we are also committed to academic standards," Schizer said in a statement. The Associated Press reports (HERE) Iran continues to supply weapons to "insurgents" in order to attack American soldiers in Iraq:

In his speech at the annual International Seminar on the Doctrine of Mahdism, held in Tehran August 25-26, 2007, Ahmadinejad stated that Western dominance has come to an end, and called on the nations of the world to rebel against "the oppressive imperialist powers" in preparation for the coming of the Hidden Imam:

"The Hidden Imam is heir to everything that has been good and beautiful throughout history, and the call [to await his coming] is a call [to have faith] in the missions of the divine prophets, in monotheism, and in justice... In these days, humanity longs for monotheism and justice. With God's grace, the [preparations] for a flood of compassion, truth and justice will soon be complete...

On August 29, 2007, Ahmadinejad said, "The Iranian nation and the Islamic Revolution have a pivotal role in preparing the ground for the coming of the Hidden Imam... We must rapidly develop Iran in order to create the [right] conditions for his coming, and we must also help the rest of the world's nations [to prepare for his return], in order to precipitate this great event..."

Ahmadinejad's recent speeches have also been characterized by statements against the Zionists and against Israel, which he called "Satan's standard-bearer."

At the August 28, 2007 press conference, he said: "[The Zionists] have no religion, for religion means having faith in others and maintaining friendly [relations] with [other] nations. But everywhere they exist there is war. They are responsible for much of the injustice in the world. The Zionists are a minority which numbers no more than a few tens of thousands, but they have formed clandestine organizations, because they do not want peace and friendship to prevail among the nations... They thrive on war and hatred. If peace [ever] prevails in the world, the people of the world will eradicate Zionism. If the [European] nations could have acted [freely], they would have thrown them out of Europe."

Holocaust Survivor Discovers His Next-Door Neighbour In Arizona Retirement Home Was Nazi SS Guard

Nathan Gasch said when Martin Hartmann moved into the retirement complex four years ago he noticed a picture of his neighbour in an SS uniform on the wall.

Mr Gasch says he was shocked but that he never reported the incident.

However, investigators from the justice department were on Mr Hartmann's trail and this week the US expelled him.

Romanian-born Mr Hartmann, 88, was forced to move back to Germany last month and stripped of his US citizenship.

The truth about his past was uncovered in a two-year investigation by the Department of Justice's Office of Special Investigations (OSI), a department created in 1979 to pursue war criminals.

During World War II Mr Hartmann worked as a member of the SS Death's Head Guard Battalion at Germany's Sachsenhausen concentration camp.

Tens of thousands of prisoners died at the camp where inmates were used for forced labour and subjected to medical experiments and torture.
